8 contestants to compete for Miss Garner crown

Eight ladies compete in the 52nd annual Miss Garner Scholarship Pageant Saturday, Nov. 6 at the Garner Historic Auditorium.

The night’s theme is “Broadway Bound.”

Contestant #1 - Tierra Burn is the 20-year-old daughter of Alfreda Wilder who resides in Morrisville, N.C. Tierra is currently a junior attending North Carolina Central University, having a double major in Political Science and English. She will perform a Contemporary Dance to "The Pretty Girl" by Priscilla Renae. Her platform is "Love is Respect: Know Your Worth."

Contestant #2 - Cynita Simpson is the 20-year-old daughter of Kimberly and Cleveland Simpson, of Raleigh, N.C. Cynita is currently attending Wake Technical College, majoring in the Arts. She will perform a Ballet en Pointe dance to the Four String Quartet's rendition of My Chemical Romance's, "The Jetset Life is Going to Kill You." Her platform is “Importance of Community Service Projects.”

Contestant #3 - Kensley Leonard is the 19-year-old daughter of Barry and Kay Leonard who reside in Southern Pines, North Carolina. Kensley is currently attending NC State University, majoring in Communications and Media. For her talent she will sing "You Don't Own Me" by Lesley Gore. Her platform is “Behind the Screen: Cyber-Bullying in America Today.” Contestant #4 - Zelle Brown is the 19-year-old daughter of Robert and Angela Brown who reside in Wilmington, N.C. Zelle is currently attending Meredith College, majoring in English. She will be performing, "Czardas" by: Vittorio Monti, on the violin for her talent presentation. Her platform is “Breaking Obstacles for Learning Differences and -Disabilities.”

Contestant #5 - Alexandria Freeman is the 21-year-old daughter of Glenn and Regina Freeman who reside in Gastonia, N.C. Alexandria is currently attending Meredith College, majoring in Fashion Merchandising and Design with a minor in Marketing. She will be performing a vocal presentation of "Stand Up for Your Love" for her talent. Her platform is “Dress for Success.”

Contestant #6 - Chelsea Guild is the 20-year-old daughter of Pete and Kathie Guild who reside in Chapel Hill, N.C. Chelsea is currently attending ECU, with a double major in Communications and Hospitality Management. She will be performing a Jump Rope Routine to for her talent to "Jump In The Line" by Harry Belafonte. Her platform is “Childhood Obesity.” Contestant #7 - Raechel Marsh is the 19-year-old daughter of Don and Jeanne Marsh who reside in Clayton, N.C. Raechel is currently attending UNC Greensboro, with a double major in Special Education and Elementary Education. She will be performing a Contemporary Dance to "Down to the River" by Alison Krauss. Her platform is “Promoting Character Education in Public Schools.”

Contestant #8 - Johna Edmonds is the 21-year-old daughter of John Daniel Edmonds and Faye Carter who reside in Lumberton, N.C. Johna is currently attending NC State University, majoring in Accounting with a minor in Spanish Language and Literatures. She will be performing a vocal presentation of "Feelin Good" by Anthony Newlwy for her talent. Her platform is “Readers to Leaders: Promoting Literacy in America's Youth.” Four teens will take part in the Garner’s Outstanding Teen pageant as well.

OT Contestant # 1 - Erica Brielle Eason is the 14-year-old daughter of Donnie Eason, Jr. and Heather Weaver, who reside in Garner, N.C. Erica is an eighth grader at North Garner Middle School. For her talent she will perform a vocal to “Reflection.” Her plat¬form is “Autism Awareness.”

OT Contestant # 2 - Martina Caroline Marler is the 15-year-old daughter of Marty and Ceicla Marler, who reside in Dunn, N.C. Martina is a sophomore at Triton High School. For her talent she will perform a high energy tap routine to “Because we can Remix.” Her platform is “MS Foundation.”

OT Contestant # 3 - Lauren Elizabeth Hitchings is the 16-year-old daughter of David and Gayla Hitchings, who reside in Cary, N.C. Lauren is a junior at Green Hope High School. For her talent she will perform a vocal to “Redeemer.” Her platform is “Alzheimer's North Carolina.”

OT Contestant # 4 - Kaylan Dean Sinclair is the 13-year-old daughter of Carlton and Karen Sinclair, who reside in Clinton, North Carolina. Kaylan is an Eighth grader at Hobbton Middle School. For her talent she will perform a vocal to “Show Off.” Her platform is “Kaylan's Kids, working with Duke Children's Hospital.”

Twelve Carolina Princess candidates will be escorted by the Miss Garner and Garner’s Outstanding Teen contestants.

The pageant begins at 7 p.m. Tickets are $12 and can be purchased at the door.
