The Falcon Park hut is about to get an addition and renovation that will make it an appropriate meeting place for seniors or teens and/or a rental space for club or family events.

Diamond Contracting, Inc. of Garner has been awarded a contract to do the work at a cost of $99,125. Town Commissioners approved the contract last week. Improvements are expected to be completed in six months.

The hut got some upgrades in 2008 when the Board of Elections was looking for a Fuquay-Varina site at which to hold early voting. At that time steel beams were added in the ceiling to support overhead heating/air conditioning units and some painting was done.

The improvements covered in the contract with Diamond include an addition on one side and redesign of the interior space. Both men and women’s restrooms will be made accessible for the handicapped.

Parks and Recreation Director Woody Harvey said the upgraded space will be adequate for gatherings of up to 60 people. Use of the building will be handled by Parks and Recreation. Harvey expects it to be used by senior groups or teen groups sponsored by the department. It may also be rented to families for reunions or to other citizen groups.

The design shows a holding kitchen that will have a refrigerator and a microwave for warming food, but no facilities for cooking.

Funding for the project is coming from money remaining from the Honeycutt Road Park capital project and from an allocation for Falcon Park improvements, budgeted in 2009. No additional allocation needs to be made from the current budget.

With any money remaining from the Falcon Park fund, Harvey said he would like to see renovations and upgrades to the park’s picnic pavilion, tennis courts, bathrooms and playground equipment.
