Meets will be held Wednesday afternoons after school starts. The team’s first three meets will be 3 kilometers (approximately 1.8 miles). After runners become seasoned and temperatures begin to decline, run distance will increase to 5 kilometers (approximately 3.1 miles).
Many students want to run farther and will elect to participate in several Saturday “Invitational” Cross Country meets. At least one student plans to participate in the August Fuquay- Varina triathlon which will be held at Club Worx and others plan to complete runs that will take them farther than 3.1 miles. Four teammates are missing practice this week to attend NCSU Cross Country Camp. Ryan Catrine, Pierce Holloway, Clay Jones, and Parker Stewart will learn everything from sports psychology and nutrition to proper running technique and race tactics.
The camp curriculum will even include a section on academic preparation for college. When they left Fuquay-Varina they proved themselves to be quite spry and with this excellent training and preparation the team anticipates some great leadership in the upcoming season.
The team, currently almost 20 members strong, would like to invite other Fuquay- Varina High School Students (including incoming Freshmen and eligible transfer students) to visit this week’s workouts and see how Cross Country could benefit them. Contact Coach Michelle Lewis by email, mlewis5@wcpss.net, or call Fuquay-Varina High School (919) 557-2511, for more information. If you see these dedicated, delightful young men and women, please cheer them on! And keep watching—the team may soon run through a neighborhood near you!
