Local Boy Scout troops will hold a hot air balloon tether ride fundraiser on Sunday at South Park Village at Hwy 55 and Avent Ferry Road. The event will run from 2 to 6 p.m. with the balloon going up from 2:30 to 5:30 p.m.

The RE/MAX balloon service was donated by RE/MAX Preferred Associates in Raleigh for the event. Father of two Eagle Scouts Peter Colwell will pilot the balloon. He has worked with the RE/MAX balloon for six years, but has 25 years of experience piloting balloons.

Just like with the adventure of scouting, balloon riders will have the opportunity to try something new. Balloon rides will rise 25 to 30 feet off the ground.

“We thought it would be very exciting and obvious,” Troop 320 Scoutmaster Glenn Traylor said.

Donations of $10 for adults and $5 for children will be accepted. All of the proceeds go to area Boy Scout troops.

“Balloons are very weather dependent and we will only be able to do rides if the winds are less than six

or seven miles per hour and no rain,” Colwell said.

If inclement weather inhibits the event, the rain date will be Nov. 18 at the same location.

The event also is a good way to find out more about scouting. Traylor said both Cub and Boy Scouts will be at the event to give out information and share experiences from scouting.
