Dr. Cathy Truitt conceded a runoff for the District 2 seat Oct. 19, but John Tedesco still may have to fight for a place on the Wake County School Board.

Tedesco had only 49 percent of the vote in the Oct. 6 election. Truitt, a 38-year veteran of the school system, said this means Tedesco hasn’t won just yet. Truitt’s name will likely remain on the Nov. 3 ballot, giving her the opportunity to gain more votes than Tedesco.

Truitt’s expected letter of concession to the Wake County Board of Elections would mean votes for her in the Nov. 3 election would not count; however, if she receives more votes than Tedesco, the School Board would appoint someone to the seat.

Tedesco is in favor of neighborhood schools, which Truitt said could potentially resegregate the school system – something she has vowed to prevent. Instead, Truitt campaigned on keeping the magnet schools that work and improving others.

Both candidates had more votes in the election than incumbent Horace Tart, who has expressed positive thoughts on forced busing to reassign students.

The District 2 seat represents Fuquay-Varina, Willow Springs and Garner.
