Wake County wraps up graduation

The Wake County Public School System awarded diplomas to 8,858 students in 22 ceremonies which started on May 24 with the Wake Early College of Health and Sciences and concluded on Sunday, June 12 with ceremonies for Fuquay-Varina, Apex, and Garner Magnet high schools.

The class of 2011 earned $79.8 million in scholarships, had 1,119 students qualify for the North Carolina Scholars program and had more than 1,498 Honor Society graduates.

Four high schools had senior classes with 500 or more students. Enloe Magnet High had 602 graduates, Wakefield High had 590, Leesville Road High had 561 and Panther Creek High had 550. The 8,858 graduates this year compares with 8,223 last year.

WCPSS high schools held their graduation ceremonies at the Raleigh Convention Center, the Progress Energy Center and in Holiday Gym at Broughton High.
