West third, Cleveland second in Conference Cup

Wells Fargo, along with the North Carolina High School Athletic Association, today announced the final standings in the Wells Fargo Conference Cup competitions for the 2012 fall sports season.

The Wells Fargo Cup award, sponsored by Wells Fargo and the NCHSAA, recognizes the high schools that achieve the best overall interscholastic athletic performance within each of the state’s four competitive classifications.

In most conferences, points are awarded based on participation and standings in conference play. Each conference determines its own method of awarding points.

In the Eastern Carolina 3-A Conference, Triton leads the way after the fall season, thanks to championships in women’s cross country, football, and volleyball. Cleveland secures second with a championship in men’s soccer and a second-place finish in volleyball, and sits just ahead of third-place Charles B. Aycock, the first-place finisher in women’s golf and second in women’s tennis. Conference Standings: Triton 39.5, Cleveland 32.5, Charles B. Aycock 31.5, South Johnston 29.5, Eastern Wayne 21.5, North Lenoir 20, Southern Wayne 18.5.

With a fantastic fall consisting of championships in men’s soccer, volleyball, football, and women’s golf, Garner leads the Greater Neuse River 4-A Conference. Clayton finished first in women’s tennis and is second overall while West Johnston finished first in men’s cross country and is in third overall. Conference Standings: Garner 83.5, Clayton 79, West Johnston 76.5, Southeast Raleigh 60.5, Knightdale 60, East Wake 56.5, Smithfield-Selma 54, Harnett Central 50.

Conference crowns in women’s golf, women’s cross country, and men’s soccer earn Green Hope the top spot after the fall in the Tri-9 4-A Conference. Second place belongs to Apex, the first-place finisher in volleyball. The conference football champion Middle Creek is third overall. Conference Standings: Green Hope 55, Apex 47.5, Middle Creek 39, Cary 36, Holly Springs 32, Panther Creek 29.5, Athens Drive 28, Fuquay-Varina 27, Lee County 21.
