A book signing by local author Lila Hopkins will be held at David Anthony’s in Fuquay-Varina on Wednesday, May 9, from 2 to 4 p.m. Lila Hopkins’ new novel, Mabel’s Way, is dedicated to and based on the life of one of Fuquay Varina’s most revered citizens, Mabel Council Johnson.
Mrs. Johnson lived in this area all her life and taught biology and other science classes at Fuquay-Varina High School for 32 years. She also coached girls’ basketball and was the first female driver’s education teacher in the state.
Mabel was married to Willard Council, town manager and high school football and basketball coach. They were married for 40 years and had three children. Judy died in infancy but Forrest lives in Chapel Hill and Cathy Ann in Asheland, Oregon.
Mabel was a widow for nine years when she married Roger Johnson of Lillington. After his death, she moved to Windsor Point, where she and the author, Lila Hopkins became close friends.
She was a friend to everyone and felt it was her responsibility to care for people who needed her. “Her glorious, optimistic, faith driven life was an inspiration to me and my character. Mabel Yancey is as much like her as I could manage,” states Hopkins. ”She had an unusual kind of spunk!”
Mabel’s Way is available at amazon.com.
Books are available at David Anthony’s, 542 North main St., Fuquay-Varina, for advance purchase for those who will not be able to attend the book signing.
