The En Plein Air Paint-Off is an AWARD Winning event, sponsored by Fuquay-Varina Downtown Association as a way to support artists in the area and bring public art to the streets.

The event will take place on April 12 from 3 to 7 p.m. where the area’s most talented painters will compete, En Plein Air (in the open air). A four-hour contest of skills will challenge each artist to create an original painting of Fuquay-Varina Downtown’s historic landscape.

On June 1 a public auction will be held where landscape enthusiasts will have a chance to take home one of these treasures in what we feel will become a collection that will be revered for many generations to come.

For interested artists

Artists (high school age through professionals) are invited to participate in this year’s event. Each artist must submit an online application and send three images of their original work to director@fuquay-varinadowntown.com, no later than March 15.

Once accepted, artists will be notified of the details of the contest and will be required to sign a waiver, which allows Fuquay-Varina Downtown to use images of their painting for future public art and marketing pieces. A rain date of April 19 has been set. For a full description of the event, visit www.fuquay-varinadowntown.com and look for En Plein Air under the events tab.

For art lovers

This event will be held in conjunction with the Downtown Cruise In and Art After Dark. Those who love art and the art of bringing old cars back to life will not want to be anywhere else on April 12.

Live Auction: Save the date for June 1 at noon. Fuquay-Varina Downtown will hold a live auction for the paintings from the contest. Be one of the few that can say they “have the original” from the 2013 contest.

Public Art: The top three winners’ paintings will be enlarged and placed on vacant brick walls in our historic district. They will be added to last year’s collection of public art, organized by Fuquay-Varina Downtown and sponsored by Bob Barker, Inc.

Fuquay-Varina Downtown Association promotes the thriving business and residential historic districts. The organization promotes preservation, educates the public, supports the business environment and grows Fuquay-Varina’s sense of community.
