What’s happening at the Fuquay-Varina Community Library?

At this time of year, school has started for many kids, beach vacations are winding down, and summer breaks are a fond memory. However, books and reading are forever. Stop by the library to get that book you need for a school project or the book that’s just great entertainment on a quiet evening. At the Fuquay-Varina Community Library we keep our shelves stocked with books that are sure to delight and inform.

Sunny’s Picks - Easy and Easy Reader

  • Because your Daddy Loves You by Andrew Clements

When things go wrong during a day at the beach, like a ball that drifts away or a gooey ice cream mess, a father could do a lot of things but always picks the loving one.

  • Jeremy Fink and the Meaning of Life by Wendy Mass

In one month Jeremy Fink will turn thirteen. But does he have what it takes to be a teenager? Jeremy’s summer takes an unexpected turn when a mysterious wooden box arrives in the mail. According to the writing on the box, it holds the meaning of life! Jeremy is supposed to open it on his thirteenth birthday. The problem is, the keys are missing, and the box is made so that only the keys will open it without destroying what’s inside. Jeremy and his friend, Lizzy, set off to find the keys.

  • Forever Four by Elizabeth Cody

Paulina, Miko, Tally, and Ivy are four extraordinarily different seventh-graders. Paulina is 100% Type A. Miko is a fashionista. Tally is a theater queen. And Ivy - well, Ivy’s the new girl at school. The four girls get tossed together to create a school magazine - by girls, for girls - in a competition to get funding for a new school program.

  • The Perks of Being a Wallflower by Stephen Chbosky

A series of letters to an unknown correspondent reveals the coming-of-age trials of a high-schooler named Charlie. Caught between trying to live his life and trying to run from it, Charlie is navigating through the strange worlds of love, “The Rocky Horror Picture Show,” and dealing with the loss of a good friend and his favorite aunt. Movie version will be released in September 2012.

  • Incarceron by Catherine Fisher (2013)

Incarceron is a prison so vast that it contains not only cells, but also metal forests, dilapidated cities, and vast wilderness. Finn, a seventeen-year-old prisoner, has no memory of his childhood and is sure that he came from Outside Incarceron. Very few prisoners believe that there is an Outside, however, which makes escape seems impossible. And then Finn finds a crystal key that allows him to communicate with a girl named Claudia. She claims to live Outside - she is the daughter of the Warden of Incarceron, and doomed to an arranged marriage. Finn is determined to escape the prison, and Claudia believes she can help him. But they don’t realize that there is more to Incarceron than meets the eye. Escape will take their greatest courage and cost more than they know. Movie version will be released in 2013.

  • Beautiful Creatures by Kami Garcia

There were no surprises in Gatlin County. We were pretty much the epicenter of the middle of nowhere. At least, that’s what I thought. Turns out, I couldn’t have been more wrong. There was a curse. There was a girl. And in the end, there was a grave. In a town with no surprises, one secret could change everything. Movie version will be released in 2013.

Women’s Club shares the ‘puppy’ love

The Fuquay-Varina Woman’s Club Public Issues Community Service Program collected items for the SPCA of Wake County from the club members. The group made a delivery Jan. 28 that included eight bottles of bleach, 10 boxes of dog treats, one large container of small dog treats, various small packages of dog treats, paper towels, seven cans of canned dog food, Kitten Chow and a $25 donation.  Darci VanderSlik accepted the donations along with one of the puppies for adoption.
