At first glance, it looks like a normal summertime lemonade stand. However, the people running it are veterans of a nationwide movement to raise money for cancer research.

Eve Moxin, 7, her father Ed and her cousins Robbie, Jack and Bradley Gelsinger, 11, set up Alex’s Lemonade Stand outside Kroger in Fuquay-Varina on June 8 and 10. Similar stands are set up once a year around the country in memory of Alexandra “Alex” Scott, a cancer patient who set up her own stand in 2000 at age 4 to raise money for a cure. Scott died in 2004 at age 8.

Ed Moxin said that the Foundation for Childhood Cancer took up Scott’s idea and turned it into a one-weekend-per-year fundraising event.

“The goal is to have at least one lemonade stand in every state,” he said.

Moxin said that this is Eve’s third year doing the stand. Robbie Gelsinger said he has been doing the stand since he was 9 years old.

Moxin said that this year’s stand was their first time setting up outside a public establishment. The stand had attracted enough community attention for Assaggio’s to donate pizza for the young fundraisers.

Moxin said their streetside stand in his wife’s home state in 2011 was particularly impressive.

“Last year we did a stand up in Massachusetts. We raised $100 in an hour just from cars passing,” he said.

The group is setting their fundraising bar higher this year.

“Eve’s goal this year is $500. Last year she raised $250,” Moxin said.

Eve and her family would have stayed at their stand all weekend except for another commitment.

“We’re here today [Friday] and we’re here Sunday. Saturday [June 9] we’re doing the Susan G. Komen Walk,” Moxin said.
