There’s something sweet happening in Fuquay-Varina. And it’s called the “frozen yogurt experience.”

Sweet Creations, the town’s resident frozen yogurt shop, will celebrate its one-year anniversary on April 13.

From day one, Sweet Creations saw tremendous support from the community, serving people from all walks of life.

“It’s really blown us away,” owner Andrea Bankert said. “God has definitely had His hand on it.”

While business slowed in the fall and winter, by February sales began to pick up steadily. Bankert said the shop has had several loyal customers.

Throughout the great days and rough ones, the family business has stayed strong.

Bankert, her husband, Austin, her father, Tom Barnum, and her in-laws, Tom and Debbie Bankert, all partnered together to get the shop up and going.

Andrea, Austin and Barnum visited a frozen yogurt shop in Virginia and realized there was an untapped market in the Fuquay-Varina area.

There weren’t many places to go as a family locally after dinner. That’s why Andrea and Austin hoped Sweet Creations would be a destination spot in town. They wanted to see people planning their next visit before they even leave the building.

That dream became a reality after they decided in late October 2011 to open the shop. A year after the shop finally opened for business, Andrea said it feels like time flew by and yet the family has savored every minute of the experience.

“It’s a little surreal,” she said. “It’s been overall a very blessed time.”

And it also has been a great experience because of the great team the family has built. Some employees have been with the shop since it served its first customers.

“We definitely couldn’t do it without them,” Andrea said.

But Andrea’s favorite part of her job – the people.

“I love coming in and seeing people connect over a cup of yogurt,” she said.

In honor of the anniversary and as a thank you to the community, Sweet Creations will celebrate on April 7 from 2 to 6 p.m. with a bouncy house, face painting and drawings for free yogurt. There also will be a buy one get one free sale all day.

Sweet Creations is located at 400 Broad Street in Varina. For more information on the anniversary celebration, call Sweet Creations at 919-346-1268.
