9th annual “Run the Quay” 5K set for June 1

The Fuquay-Varina Chamber of Commerce is proud to announce that preparations for the ninth Run the Quay 5K Race are well underway, and that the advance registrations for this annual event that is held in historic downtown Fuquay-Varina, indicate that turnout for this event will be even better than last year.

Registration is live, and participants already are registering for the run on a daily basis. Sponsors are secured and preparations for the second children’s fun run, sponsored by Fuquay-Varina Pediatrics are underway as well.

This year’s event will be on June 1 and will begin at the Fuquay-Varina Presbyterian Church on Ennis Street at 8 a.m. and wind through historic downtown Fuquay-Varina. Runners will be able to pick up their race packets on May 31 from 4 to 7 p.m.

Runners and walkers should plan to arrive by 7 a.m. on the day of the race to find parking and prepare for the event. Walk-ins will be able to register, but it is highly recommended that participants pre-register to guarantee enough time for warm-up and checking out all the booth vendors on site.

Information about the race is available online at www.fuquay-varina.com (click on the race logo on the home page). Participants can register for the race by going to www.sportoften.com and searching for “Quay.” Paper registrations are available at the Chamber, but it is less expensive to register online.

This year’s race will again feature vendor booths spaces in the field next to the Presbyterian Church that participants can check out before and after the race. Businesses and organizations can rent a 10x10 space for $100 and sell food and/or merchandise or hand out information to race participants and their families. The Chamber registered more than 675 athletes last year, and anticipate more than 700 registrants this year.

The race again will offer the wheelchair division, which opens the race to a larger competitive community of participants. Fuquay-Varina Pediatrics’ children’s fun run at 9 a.m. on the day of the race will offer two options—a one-mile run and a 100-yard dash. This separate but equal event will take place on the Fuquay-Varina Middle School athletic field next to the Run the Quay venue and will be tailored to toddlers through age 10. Children can still register to run in the 5K, but this fun run will give children another way to participate in the event if the competitive race does not appeal to them. Those interested in participating in the fun run also can sign up for it on sportoften.com.

If individuals are interested in being sponsors, would like information about booth rentals or would like to volunteer on or before race day, please call the Chamber at 919-552-4947 and speak to Lynanne Fowle.

Register early and join the Chamber for a fun event and then stay in downtown Fuquay-Varina for the Celebrate Fuquay-Varina and Celebration of the Arts festivals that will be going on from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. that same day.
