Walking the halls of Fuquay-Varina High School, students have the opportunity to make lifelong friends. But, over the years, it’s easy to drift apart.

When the Class of 1998 missed out on its five-year and 10-year reunions, some classmates knew they wanted to make an effort to put together something to commemorate the 15-year mark.

Graduates Melissa Baker Miller and Leah Sherron Parrish have planned a reunion for June 15 at the American Legion Post #116, beginning at 5 p.m.

Originally, Parrish, now a quality coordinator for Merck & Co., wanted to have a small get-together at her horse farm in the Duncan community. But, she put out a message on Facebook and recruited the help of Miller, now a Hospice nurse and Thirty-One consultant who has a 7-year-old, and the two saw liability issues of having the reunion on personal property.

Students already have started to reply; graduates that still live in the Fuquay area as well as out-of-state friends are coming. Sadly, an exchange student from Mexico won’t be able to make it.

But Miller and Parrish are hopeful they will have a great turnout and enjoy a night with old friends.

“People have wanted this to happen for quite some time,” Parrish said. “We’re ecstatic.”

“We’re ready to do it now,” Miller said.

With such a large class, it has been difficult to find everyone. Nearly 100 invitations went out by mail recently. But Parrish and Miller are happy to have more classmates join in the fun.

The night will be full of nostalgia as the class flower, song and motto will be used. Also, classmates Sammy Gore, Jamie Street and Dewitt Taylor will be remembered. Parrish and Miller will give out black ribbons for all of the reunion attendees to wear at the event.

Tickets cost $28 per person or $56 per couple. Tickets include a catered dinner and tunes provided by Big John from 102.9. A cash bar will be available.

“We’re doing it very cost effective for the economy,” Parrish said.
