The Eighth Grade Exploring Business Technologies classes at Fuquay-Varina Middle School participated in the North Carolina Council on Economic Education’s “Stock Market Game” against 215 other teams located in Eastern North Carolina during the month of April. The purpose of the game was to improve students financial literacy needed to succeed in today’s world. The students were introduced to concepts such as profit/loss, credit, investing and saving strategies which are now part of the new curriculum standards for all North Carolina students.
As part of the game simulation each team was given a starting account balance of $100,000 dollars to invest. Students were encouraged to purchase stock of companies whose products they were familiar with. Apple, maker of the Iphone and Ipad was a popular choice and a moneymaker for the team! The Fuquay team place 48 out of 215 teams - a great showing finishing the four-week project with a balance of $103,806 for a return of 3.8 percent.
