More than 1,000 have volunteered as part of the Season of Service with The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
More than 1,000 volunteers from The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints are making a difference in Southern Wake County in their fifth annual Season of Service, through tomorrow.
The event was anchored by an American Red Cross Blood Drive on May 9. Beautification projects were completed in Morrisville, Garner, at Davis Drive Middle and Elementary schools, at Salem Middle and Elementary and at Baucom elementary. Yet other Church volunteers gathered 46 bags of refuse along the Jordan Lake inlets.
Improvement efforts occurred at the Tammy Lynn Center for Disabilities, Camp Royal and the Corral Therapeutic Equestrian Program. Also, the LDS Church volunteers collected and donated clothing to the Episcopal Farmworker Ministry to help protect the workers from the elements and pesticides.
Food drives for the Western Wake Crisis Ministry and Fuquay-Varina Food Pantry also were successful (with the donation of more than 750 pounds of food).
Fuquay-Varina Food Pantry’s Cynthia Ellison said, “Success does not even come close to being the best word for [this event] – amazing success is better. What a wonderful group to work with; everything went very well.
The Apex Peakfest benefitted for the 10th consecutive year from LDS volunteers as they helped set up and dismantle vendor booths.
Peakfest 2013 Chairman Jeff Hastings said, “The LDS Church is instrumental in its volunteerism for the Apex Peakfest. We couldn’t set up the 115 vendors, plus the additional sponsors that are here without all their volunteers.
“It probably is one of the best-run festivals in the Southeast because of these volunteers. The feedback we get from vendors is phenomenal because of them.”
Blain East, marketing representative for the Festival Commission, added that the LDS Church ” was absolutely fantastic on bringing all the volunteers…they get the vendors up and running efficiently.”
