For the third year in a row, the Fuquay-Varina Police will host Teen Day Fuquay, an alcohol and distracted driving awareness program, on May 4. The program is made possible through a grant by the Wake County Board of Alcoholic Control, which has called Teen Day Fuquay “the most effective teen alcohol awareness program in Wake County.” The North Carolina City and County Communicators Association presented Teen Day Fuquay its Best North Carolina Event Award this past March. Even more noteworthy is the fact that the event drew more than 1,200 kids from local middle and high schools which gave the event and message high marks.

So what can teens expect at Teen Day Fuquay? In a word: Experience. The goal is for teen drivers to gain hands-on experience and learn the facts at Teen Day Fuquay that will help them make wiser choices about driving and keep their lives full of endless possibilities.

At Teen Day, teenagers will have the chance to test their skills at the Drive Wise Course, filled with high tech and low tech activities designed to drive home the realities of mixing driving with alcohol or texting. In too many cases, this experience comes in the real world with horrible consequences. The first 300 teens to complete the Drive Wise Course will get a free Teen Day t-shirt, which has proven a hot commodity! The Fuquay-Varina Fire Department will present an all new crash scenario that promises to be an eye opener for teens.

There will plenty of hands-on experiences. No preaching. Teens surveyed after last year’s event appreciated the message delivery and they got the message. Nearly 100 percent of those surveyed understand that drinking and driving are a bad idea.

Teens, ages 11-18, are invited to attend Teen Day Fuquay on May 4 at the Fuquay-Varina Community Center from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tell your friends. Bring a friend. Parents are welcome. The event is free and there will be food, prizes, live music and interactive experiences to educate about the dangers of drinking and distracted driving.
