Opprobrious.

It’s just one of many words that teams could face at the Literacy Council of Wake County’s 13th Annual Spelling Bee next month.

Three-person teams from Wake County businesses and organizations are gearing up for the annual event at Cary Academy on Sept. 12, studying professional-level word lists and taking part in office spelling bee competitions.

But, while the bee will be focused on the adults, there’s plenty for kids to take part in as well.

“We’ve evolved to be a little kid-friendlier each year,” Community Outreach Manager for the Literacy Council Nora Casper said.

There will be a spell-a-word game and activities that involve audience participation this year. There will be a costume contest and team spirit award winners announced at the event as well.

“It’s a little silly, but it’s a really great evening to support the Literacy Council,” Casper said.

The Literacy Council employs the help of the Wake County Public Library System to compile the word list. Each team is given a word and has 60 seconds to collaborate and recite the correct spelling before moving on in the competition. After the first five sets of words, the remaining contestants enter into a championship round.

“It really is just a fun event,” Casper said.

This year, she expects about 10 teams to take part in the event.

The spelling bee is open to the general public. Teams pay a registration fee and the Literacy Council is still accepting team entries.
