Fuquay-Varina Downtown is the center of the community where the rich heritage of mineral springs, trains and tobacco markets has evolved into two unique downtown districts linked by history.
Even the rain could not stop or dampen the community spirit on Saturday, Sept. 29 in Fuquay-Varina Downtown as the 2nd Annual “Downtown Bounty” got under way. It was an exciting event that celebrated fresh local foods and community spirit, much like the Farmers Day Parade. Local farmers, restaurants, civic groups, churches and downtown merchants came together to celebrate a day of Downtown Bounty in the historic Varina shopping district.
Eight contestants in the Brunswick Stew Cook-Off competed for bragging rights and a chance to win the $300 1st Place prize. The winners are:
1st Place: Phil’s Backyard Smokehouse Gang (Phil Searcy)
2nd Place: Four Oaks Bank (Larry Knott)
3rd Place: Wash Pot Stew (Mike Anderson)

The band, Thief of Hearts, had everyone dancing and singing…in the rain! The Fuquay-Varina Arts Council sponsored the highly entertaining Dunking Booth and Graff Creative ran this year’s Photo Booth. Our farmers from the Growers Market came to show-off the abundance of produce and crops still available this time of year.
Local sponsors provided the necessary funds to provide an event of this level. Proceeds from the sale of lemonade from Lemonade Stands that children decorated and operated themselves, will go to benefit the Children’s Hospital through the Wake Med Foundation. We want to thank Elliotts Pharmacy for their continued sponsorship of the Lemonade Stands. Children who participate in this event learn a valuable life-lesson about service to others. The entire day was all about Fuquay-Varina. People visited, laughed and spent time cultivating friendships. “Although the weather was a bit challenging, we were pleased with the amount of people who came out for the Event. Our volunteers and vendors showed what makes our community so special – when given lemons, we make lemonade” acknowledged Naomi Riley, Fuquay-Varina Downtown Executive Director. “We couldn’t do this without the hard-working and big-hearted volunteers who give so much of their time and talent. Fuquay-Varina Downtown is where our history began and I am honored to work with so many people who continue to “make history” each and everyday in our historic districts.”
