Forty-four players make up the Fuquay Middle School football team this season. Twenty-four are eighth graders and eight of those helped make up the Bengal team last year. Practices began Sept. 2 and the coaches are excited about the diversity of skill set they will be able to use on the offensive and defensive sides of the ball with this team.
Head coach Alan Joyner, in his 28th season, is joined by assistant coaches Brett Newby, in his 7th season with the Bengals and George Bolander, who begins his 8th season working with the team. Head Coach Joyner will focus on quarterbacks, running backs and defensive backs while Assistant Coach Newby will be the defensive coordinator and work with the offensive line. Assistant Coach Bolander will train the receivers, help with the defensive line and run special teams. The coaches give the team credit for “working very hard and making great improvements everyday while pushing each other to become better. We want this season to teach all the boys to have pride in what they do, learn teamwork, have impeccable sportsmanship and learn to do their very best in every situation.” The coaches are excited to get out there and compete in their first game.
The team has a new 2-man blocking sled that is helping with training this year. Coach Newby states, “we are needing an upgrade of helmets and shoulder pads and that is why the community supporting the Middle School Boosters is so important.” Money collected by the booster organization goes directly to improve the athletic program. The booster membership drive is underway. The cost of a family membership is $75, which each member of the family receives an ALL SPORTS PASS that will cover admission for every home sporting event for the 2011-2012 school year. Individual membership passes can be purchased for $35.00 and covers all home sporting events as well for one person. The Sponsorship campaign is also underway and invites businesses to sponsor FVMS athletics and help their school succeed in their athletic program by funding things that cannot be covered by the minimal funding Wake County provides. Forms for Membership and Sponsorship can be downloaded on the schools website at fvms.wcpss.net or forms can be obtained in the school office.
The Bengals open their season on Wednesday, Sept. 21 at home against West Cary. All games begin at 3:45 p.m. and admission is $4 at the gate. Fans can sit in bleachers or bring their own chairs to the field. Concessions will be available.
