If you think you knew volleyball at Fuquay-Varina Middle School, then you need to take another look. First of all, the Lady Bengals are wearing new uniforms, thanks to the FVMS Athletic Boosters. The boosters also provided the team with a new caddy which makes storage and transportation of the net system easier and safer.
On the court, the Lady Bengal are improved as well. They started the season with two very close victories over West Cary and Salem Middle Schools. They are playing with more confidence and consistency making each game competitive; losing 5-25 is a thing of the past.
To improve team chemistry, the Lady Bengals walked “uptown” to Elliot’s for an after school treat, attended the JV and Varsity game at FVHS and a Campbell University Women’s Volleyball match.
However, uniforms and a caddy are not the only thing new to FVMS Volleyball. Beginning on Friday, Oct. 14 the NEW Boys Volleyball Club began meeting after school. Coach Marcy Smith is sponsoring the club to the 6th, 7th and 8th grade boys at FVMS who want to learn how to play volleyball. With men’s volleyball at the club and college (four local colleges are sponsoring men’s teams) level on the rise Coach Smith hopes that the boys will want to keep playing and realize volleyball is not just for girls.
Finally, the team is taking most pride in the improvement they have made in their Paws for the Cause event at FVMS this Thursday, Oct. 20. The Lady Bengals are including the soccer team and the cheer squad to help them raise awareness and funds to defeat breast cancer. Theme this year is “Working Hard to Beat Breast Cancer” with proceeds from the event going to the Kay Yow Foundation. The Bengal teams will have sports baskets to raffle as well as other gifts and goodies for all. So wear you PINK and come support the Bengals and a great cause!
