PWLA Spring Fling

The Fuquay-Varina Chamber of Commerce Professional Women’s Leadership Association will hold its Annual Spring Fling Social on May 4, at On The Snap. Tickets will be $10/$12 at the door and can be purchased at the Chamber or from a PWLA Steering Committee member. Proceeds are used for scholarships. Choirfest

ChoirFest 2012 will be held Sunday, May 6 at 3 p.m. at Abiding Presence Luthern Church, 7300 Sunset Lake Road, Fuquay-Varina. Over 100 voices will fill the room with praise and worship. Choirs from many local churches and various faith traditions will offer a wonderful musical variety – from gospel to folk, a cappella singers, to small group ensembles. An offering at this event will go to Southern Wake Faith Community in Action to help those in emergency financial distress in our community.

Fish Fry

The men’s group at White Memorial Presbyterian Church in Willow Spring announces its first annual Mothers’ Day Weekend fish fry, on Friday, May 11 from 5-8 p.m. at the church. For $7, diners will enjoy a large portion of fish, fresh hush puppies, cole slaw, and homemade dessert, plus beverages. The plates are available for Take-out or Eat-in. No delivery is offered. Proceeds from the sale will support mission causes of the congregation. The church is located at 1459 White Memorial Church Road in Willow Spring, between Hwy. 210 and Mt. BBQ Fundraiser

The Apex United Methodist Men’s Group will hold its 20th annual chicken and pork barbecue on Friday, May 4, from 11 a.m. until 7 p.m. The church’s BBQ event traditionally kicks off Apex’s “Peak Fest” weekend. Barbecue customers will have the option of fast, curb-side takeout or dining-in at the church’s activity center. The BBQ plates will cost $8 per person. Proceeds from the event fund the church’s diversified outreach mission, including local programs like Western Wake Crisis Ministry, Habitat for Humanity and Apex Outreach Service Project, a program that repairs homes in Apex, Holly Springs, and New Hill. The AUMC campus is located adjacent to Apex’s historic downtown business district at the corner of Chatham and Hughes Streets. American Legion 2nd Annual Crawfish, Shrimp & BBQ

The American Legion Post 116 of Fuquay-Varina is hosting it’s 2nd Annual Crawfish, Shrimp & BBQ Dinner Saturday May 5, from 3 - 7 p.m. at 6400 Johnson Pond Rd. MMIA Volunteers Needed

There is nothing more satisfying than helping someone in need of assistance. There are many volunteer opportunities available at Military Missions in Action (MMIA). MMIA is a nonprofit organization with a vision of setting the standard of support for our veterans with disabilities and members of the Armed Forces by engaging neighbors, businesses and organizations. Food Cupboard Fundraising Raffle

You can help the Food Cupboard and win some cash. The Holly Springs Food Cupboard is having the annual Raffle Fundraiser! Tickets are $20 each and only 400 tickets will be sold. Rowing Club

Summer Rowing Camps Triangle Rowing Club’s Summer Rowing Academy These camps are designed for both novice (brand new) and experienced rowers! Alzheimer’s Caregivers Support Group

The Fuquay-Varina Alzheimer’s Caregivers’ Support Group meets on the first Tuesday of each month at 6:30 p.m., at the Windsor Point, and the third Tuesday at 2 p.m. at Carillon Assisted Living. This is an informal, open discussion meeting and everyone is invited to attend. We especially welcome those who are caregivers for persons having Dementia/Alzheimer’s Disease. Holly Springs Food Cupboard

The Holly Springs Food Cupboard provides food to those in need in our community. The Cupboard is an all-volunteer organization and is a 501(c)(3) so donations are tax deductible. You can help by donating healthy non-perishable food items such as broth, powdered milk, peanut butter, oatmeal/cereal, canned vegetables, dried beans, rice, canned meats, canned fruits, mac and cheese, personal hygiene products and toilet paper. WEECare Registration

Fuquay-Varina Baptist Church WEECare is now enrolling for the 2012-2013 school year, offering preschool for ages 2 – pre-K and a before/after school program serving Fuquay Elementary School and Lincoln Heights. Wake Chapel Cookbook

The Women’s Fellowship of Wake Chapel Christian Church has published a second edition of its cookbook, “Feed My Sheep”. From simple salad recipes to desserts, or main course meats, the cookbook contains a variety of recipes contributed by members of the church. Office Volunteers Needed

Military Missions In Action is looking for office volunteers which can assist with a variety of clerical and project responsibilities. No set hours are necessary, however it would need to be during regular business hours at the MMIA office at 411B North Judd Pkwy in Fuquay-Varina. Depression Support Group

Wake County Human Services and NAMI (Nation Alliance of Mental Illness) have joined forces in an effort to help people with mild - moderate depression. St. Bernadette Church at 1005 Wilbon Rd., Fuquay-Varina is allowing us to offer a free peer support group in room #4 on Thursday nights from 7 to 8:30 p.m.

Local Military Families Connect

English as a Second Language

Meals on Wheels needs volunteers

Meals on Wheels is currently seeking volunteers to deliver meals to the elderly and homebound in the Fuquay-Varina/Holly Springs area. Meal delivery is done Monday through Friday from 10 am to 12 noon and takes about an hour. You may volunteer once a week or once a month. Meals on Wheels is looking for people 60 years old and up to join us for a hot meal, fellowship and activities. We meet weekdays at Pine Acres Community Center from 9:30 a.m. until 12 noon. Mothering Matters!

Mothers of Preschoolers (MOPS) meets at Kennebec Baptist Church in Angier the second and fourth Monday of each month from 9:30-11:30 a.m. MOPS is open to all mothers of children birth to age 5. Southern Regional GAP (Grandparents as Parents) Kincare Support Group

The mission of the Southern Regional GAP is to provide ongoing support not only to grandparents but all family members caring for other family members. GAP meets once a month on the third Friday night of the month at 6:30 p.m. at the Fuquay-Varina Presbyterian Church at 310 N. Ennis St.; Fuquay-Varina (Downstairs meeting room/back entrance).

Clothes Closet is open

The Clothes Closet at Saint Augusta Missionary Baptist Church is open Saturdays from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. except for the third Saturday of each month. All clothing is free at the church located at 605 Bridge Street in Fuquay-Varina.

Bible Buddies

New Life Wesleyan Church is offering Bible Buddies, a special needs class, for ages K-5th. Held every Sunday from 9:30-11:30 a.m. The class focuses on music, sensory activities, art, snacks, and one on one Bible teaching. Each child is prayed for every Sunday. All disabilities are welcome. Interact’s Pass It On thrift store, 309 South Main St., Fuquay-Varina, is looking for enthusiastic and dedicated volunteers to work as sorters and cashiers. Pass It On sells high quality, gently used women’s and children’s clothing at low prices. Proceeds from sales at Pass It On support counseling services for victims of domestic violence and rape/sexual assault at Interact’s Southern Wake Outreach Center. Myasthenia Gravis Support Group

Our goal is to provide an informal atmosphere for family and friends of MG patients to meet, have a meal, share experiences and provide outreach to newly diagnosed Myasthenia Gravis patients. Meetings will be in a rural area adjacent to Hwy. 42 and Hwy 401 near Fuquay. The location is centrally located between Raleigh, Research Triangle and Fayetteville. Other towns within a one hour drive include Durham, Chapel Hill, Sanford, Clayton, Smithfield and Dunn. Meetings will be held on the first Saturday of each month at 12 noon. Faith Community In Action

Southern Wake Faith Community in Action (SWFCA), a local nonprofit that provides emergency financial assistance to needy persons living in Fuquay-Varina and Willow Springs, has relocated its office to 605 Bridge Street inside Saint Augusta Missionary Baptist Church.
