About 1,500 people descended on South Park in Fuquay-Varina to enjoy food, music, rides and weather-threatened fireworks at the town’s annual Fourth of July celebration on July 3.
Mayor Pro Tempore Charlie Adcock welcomed guests by emphasizing how steeped in tradition the celebration is.
“Over the last few years, we’ve had some economic issues in our country, and some towns have cancelled their Fourth of July celebrations. That won’t be the case in Fuquay-Varina,” Adcock said. “This is an important part of Fuquay-Varina, and we want to keep it that way.”
Hickory, N.C., band The Extraordinaires entertained the audience throughout the evening with songs ranging from jazz hits like “Sweet Carolina Girls” to contemporary pop hits like “I Got a Feeling.”
Children enjoyed the flying elephants and other rides, as well as various inflatable slides and bounce houses.
Food vendors like Party in a Pita and Hawgs and Dawgs served funnel cakes, lemonade, fried Oreos and Snickers bars and other treats to hungry guests.
Patriot State Bank sponsored the celebration. Members of its customer services department came onstage before the show to announce its new account for veterans and to repeat the bank’s motto of “We can…We will…We are lending money!”
A voter registration team fanned out with clipboards to register new voters. Krispy Kreme representatives also attended the celebration with coupons for a free dozen glazed doughnuts with the purchase of any dozen at regular price.
Although the sun shone for much of the evening, black clouds and thunder threatened the festivities as darkness fell. Some guests left early to avoid the rain, but those who stayed enjoyed a 10-minute fireworks show that ended about 10 seconds before a pelting rain arrived.
