Although Sydney Brown may be young, she proved she knows her way around the kitchen. Brown won the Healthy Lunchtime Challenge sponsored by Epicurious and First Lady Michelle Obama. Sydney will be the only person to represent North Carolina during an upcoming trip to the White House and her picture will also be featured in the Aug. 3, edition of People Magazine.

According to Sydney’s mom La Tayna Brown, Sydney first learned about the competition from a deacon at Christian Faith Baptist Church, the church where the Brown family attends.

On June 12, Sydney entered the competition with a meatloaf burger and it did not take long for judges to let her know that they loved her dish. Sydney was contacted June 22 that she was a finalist in the competition and was notified that she had won on July 24.

This was not the first time that Sydney had won with the meatloaf burger.

“Sydney revamped a recipe she created for a Red Robin contest she won for the Apex store a couple of years ago that she named Sydney’s Homerun Meatloaf Burger,” La Tanya Brown said. “She used lean ground beef and pureed vegetables to mix inside the burger to make it healthier.”

As part of her victory, Sydney will travel to Washington D.C. on Aug 19-20.

La Tanya Brown said her family is excited for Sydney.

“We could not be more proud of Sydney! She is one of those kids who stays true to what she feels, thinks and who she is as a person. This could not have happened to a better person. Winning this challenge is truly an honor and Sydney feels very blessed to have been chosen to represent the State of North Carolina.”
