While every child loves to play with toys, not all toys are safe for children. With the holidays upon us, it is important to remember a few things about toys and the dangers they can pose for our children. Whether you are donating gently used toys to charity or giving a new toy as a present, keep in mind these few safety measures when selecting a toy.

  • Before shopping for toys, consider the child’s age, interest and skill level; always select age appropriate toys.
  • Read the label on the back of the box, bag or toy package. Look for well-made toys and pay attention to the age and safety information on the warning label.
  • Be aware of choking hazards for children under age 3. Keep children younger than 3 away from toys with small parts.
  • Whether wrapped in cellophane or plastic, always remove and discard the packaging from a toy before giving it to a child.
  • Check over new toys for damages, sharp edges or loose parts.
  • Check over old toys for damages from wear and tear.
  • Separate and store toys by age levels. Teach children to put away their toys after playing to prevent injuries or accidents.
  • Be cautious of toys containing batteries, especially coin-sized button batteries. If a toy is battery operated, make sure the battery compartment is secure and locked.
