Feuerstein
Lewis “Lew” Edward Feuerstein passed away on October 31, 2012 at the age of 86. Lew was born in Norfolk, Va., on October 8, 1926 and was raised in Portsmouth, Va. Lew enlisted in the U.S. Army in 1944 and served in WWII in the European Theater. Upon his return from war, Lew continued to serve in the U.S. Reserves and worked for the Western Electric Company. In 1949, Lew attended Eastern Carolina University in Greenville, N.C., on his GI Bill and enrolled in the ECU Air Force ROTC. Lew was commissioned a Second Lieutenant in the U.S. Air Force on May 18, 1951. While at ECU, Lew met his first soul mate, Nettie Burma Tunstall of Apex, N.C. They were married in 1953 and spent 42 wonderful years together until Burma’s passing in 1995. In 2001, Lew met and married his second soul mate Joyce W. Noxon. They enjoyed time together traveling to Las Vegas, golfing, playing cards, eating crabs and simply “being together” until his passing.
Lew’s career in the USAF included tours in the Korean War and the Vietnam Conflict. During his Vietnam service, Lew was an in-country Pacification Officer from 1968-1969 and was awarded the Bronze Star for his distinguished service. Lew also served with the USAF as a Missile Officer and Range Officer. He retired from the Air Force as a Major on October 31, 1969. Upon his retirement from the USAF, Lew did contract work for Carolina Power and Light as a land right of way agent and subsequently opened a successful TV repair shop in Apex, N.C. Lew continued to serve the USAF throughout his life as an active member of the Air Force Association and was the Chapter President of the AFA Tarheel Chapter #207 in 2006. Lew never forgot the importance of the Air Force ROTC program that launched his career. Until his passing, Lew was actively involved in many programs such as drill meets and awards ceremonies for the UNC and N.C. State Air Force ROTC. Lew also was a former President of the Triangle Chapter of the Military Officers Association of America.
Lew is survived by his sister, Margaret (“Pat”) Church of Norfolk, Va., and was predeceased by his younger brother, James Fleming Feuerstein, Jr. of Orlando, Fla. He is survived by his three children, Lewis Edward Feuerstein, Jr. and wife Susan Benfield Feuerstein of Holly Springs, N.C.; Thomas Earl Feuerstein and wife Marlene Watkins Feuerstein of Wake Forest, N.C.; and Dee Ann Feuerstein of Raleigh, N.C. Lew also has three stepchildren by his second wife Joyce W. Noxon Feuerstein, Robert Bruce Noxon married to the former Nancy Owen Pryce of Fredericksburg, Va.; Steven Frank Noxon married to Tamzine Tuttle of Meriden, Conn.; and Keith Edward Noxon married to Kelly Ann Kennedy of Wilmington, N.C. Lew has four grandchildren and 10 step-grandchildren.
Friends and family are invited to attend services on Friday, November 9 from 7 to 9 p.m. to be held at Capital Funeral Home, 2205 Millbrook Road, Raleigh, N.C. A brief memorial service will begin at 8 p.m. In lieu of flowers, Lew requested that donations be made to the U.S.O. of North Carolina, RDU CTR. P.O. Box 91443, Raleigh, N.C. 27675.
