In the early morning hours of Jan. 3, a Fuquay-Varina man was killed after the car he was driving was struck by an alleged drunk driver.

According to State Highway Patrol 1st Sgt. Jeff Gordon , Highway Patrol officials received a report of an accident at 12:10 a.m. on Jan. 3 at the intersection of Lake Wheeler and Hilltop Needmore Roads.

Aaron Allgood, 24, of Fuquay-Varina was traveling eastbound on Hilltop Needmore Road in a Mazda when he was hit by a Saturn driven by Ross Mayfield. Although the Saturn was registered to a Fuquay-Varina address, Mayfield had a Texas driver’s license, Gordon said.

Gordon said Mayfield, 22, ran a red light at the intersection and struck Allgood’s car in the intersection. Mayfield and a passenger in his car were not seriously hurt as a result of the accident. However Allgood was killed as a result of the accident.

Mayfield was charged with driving while impaired and further charges are pending. The case is still under investigation.
