I hear a lot that Valentine’s Day is a made up holiday by women in an effort to get gifts. However, Valentine’s Day doesn’t have to break the bank and you can show your love how you feel for pennies on the dollar.

For those with children that have to purchase Valentine’s Day cards and goodies for classroom parties, there are several things you can do to save. My children’s Valentine’s Day cards have already been purchased for their classroom parties. I purchased their cards last year after Valentine’s Day for 75 percent off. I also have purchased items for my son’s classroom party. My son’s teacher passed out a sign-up list at the beginning of the year for items we would like to donate for various parties. I signed up to bring paper products for Valentine’s Day. I purchased solid red napkins and plates during the after Christmas sales for 75 percent off as well. Once again, planning is key when wishing to save money.

For those who haven’t purchased items at clearance prices yet, I find that Pinterest is a great website for creative crafty Valentine’s Day gifts for any student. They have great Valentine’s Day craft ideas that don’t cost a lot.

For the one you love at home, there are several examples of thriftiness you can do without looking cheap. Make a coupon book for acts of service and give it to the one you love. Instead of joining the masses on Valentine’s Day for dinner, stay at home and make a romantic meal. Finally, for those looking to purchase flowers, several area grocery stores sell bouquets for less than $5. A lot of times I enjoy the effort behind the gift more than the price tag.

Remember this holiday that Valentine’s Day doesn’t have to be expensive. You can show the one you love you care without having to spend a fortune.
