As summer draws to a close and parents begin planning their children’s return to school, after-school programs are a high priority on the list for many.

Most schools release between 3 and 4 p.m. while many parents are still at work. Luckily, Wake County has numerous after-school programs that are safe and affordable.

One of the most convenient options is the after-school programs offered by most schools around the area. These programs offer a professional and safe environment for children to spend their time after school. The programs have homework sessions, craft projects, computer time and other activities. SoDonna Baker, a parent who resides in Fuquay-Varina, is thankful for the program at Fuquay-Varina Elementary, stating, “It’s really a wonderful program and I know my son is in good hands after school.”

Another option is to enroll in a center around the area that specializes in after-school programs, such as Gingerbread LittleVersity. The after-school program at Gingerbread LittleVersity provides transportation from many schools in the area, such as Fuquay-Varina Elementary and West Lake Elementary, to their location. The program also offers exciting after-school activities such as cooking, outdoor games and art.

The Hunt Community Center in Holly Springs also offers after-school and track out programs for students. They provide transportation from schools located in Holly Springs to the community center. The program offers homework assistance, snacks and other activities. Fees and other information can be found at http://www.hollyspringsnc.us/

Regardless of which option parents choose, after-school programs may help reduce the stress placed on a working family. “I highly recommend an after-school program to all working parents,” Baker stated.
