Church in the Woods Workshop

You are invited to a seminar, “How to Help the Poor.” Taught by a 70-year-old grandmother, Alice McGee, who has been working with the poor and homeless for more than 35 years. She and her group, Church in the Woods, find, engage and disciple the poorest of the poor, addicts, sex workers, alcoholics, the mentally ill, people living on the streets, in the woods, under bridges and going to wherever “fish” and “lost sheep” can be found. They save lives physically and spiritually.

Children’s Youth Theater Production

STARS Theater will host a children’s youth theater production March 1 at 7 p.m. and March 2 at 2 p.m. Children will adore this wonderfully imaginative and creative play based on the famous stories of Rudyard Kipling. Mowgli is a jungle boy raised by wolves. He lives in the bush with his good friends Baloo, the bear, Bagheera, the panther and Kaa, the python snake. His mortal enemy is Shere Khan, a man-eating tiger. Shere Khan wants to rule the jungle, and it’s up to Mowgli to defeat him. This is truly a ’participation’ show as your audiences get to portray silly monkeys, helpful elephants, wolves, reptiles, bees and even a tropical storm. Also Contains a small message about the importance of ecology.

Clayton Youth Theater

Clayton Youth Theater follows its highly successful run of “Hairspray” with “The Matchmaker,” a comedy by Thornton Wilder. The play will be performed on Feb. 28 and March 1 and 2 at 7:30 p.m. at The Clayton Center Auditorium. Upward Registration and Skill Days

Kennebec Baptist Church in Angier will have registration and skill days for its Upward Soccer league for boys and girls, ages K4-sixth grade. Barbecue, Chicken, Fish dinner

There will be a plate selling at Holland Chapel A.M.E.Z. Church, 360 Burgess Road, in Apex on March 8 and 9 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. You may eat in, take out or have it delivered within the local areas.

Menu items include barbecue, chicken and fish plates with sides and dessert. The price for all dinner plates is $7. Sandwiches will be available for $3 each.

Chicken Barbecue Dinner

Fuquay-Varina Area Community Collaborative

The Fuquay-Varina Area Community Collaborative is a community-driven effort supported by a committed group of area residents and service providers working together to enhance the quality of life for citizens living in

Fuquay-Varina and Willow Springs. The goal is to assist individuals and families with developing the ability to connect with and manage resources, have opportunities to enhance life style and quality of life.

The Collaborative will host an event March 14 at Fuquay-Varina Middle School.

En Plein Air Contest

Are you an artist that would like to participate in the highly successful En Plein Air Paint-off? High school-age through professionals are encouraged to participate. Angier Parks and Recreation Spring Sports

Greater Tuna at Stars Theater and Art Center

On March 15 at 7 p.m. and on March 16 at 2 p.m. enjoy “Greater Tuna,” a hilarious comedy about Texas’ third smallest town, where the Lion’s Club is too liberal and Patsy Cline never dies. The eclectic band of citizens that make up this town are portrayed by only two performers, making this satire on life in rural America even more delightful as they depict all of the inhabitants of Tuna — men, women, children and animals.

The show began as a simple party skit based on a political cartoon more than 25 years ago in Austin, Texas. Talented creators Joe Sears, Jaston Williams and Ed Howard were the imaginative authors that parlayed the sketch into a critically acclaimed production, which has entertained audiences across the country ever since.

Harnett County Teens as Parents Fundraiser

The Harnett County Teens as Parents (TAP) is hosting a pancake breakfast, photo with the Easter bunny and bake sale. This will be held March 23 from 7:30 to 10:30 a.m. at the Coats Community Building. Proceeds from this will benefit the TAP program. Easter Egg Hunt

Evangel Pentecostal Holiness Church

The Evangel Pentecostal Holiness Church, located at 201 Meadow Drive in Fuquay-Varina, has several opportunites for worship during the week. On Sundays, prayer begins at 9:30 a.m., followed by Sunday School at 9:45 a.m. and an 11 a.m. worship service. Evening worship is at 6 p.m. the second, fourth and fifth Sundays of the month. Women’s and men’s ministries meet at 6 p.m. the first Suday of the month.

On Wednesdays, adult Bible study begins at 7 p.m. The church also hosts Missionettes for girls of all ages and Royal Rangers for boys of all ages.

Wake County WIC Program

WIC or the Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants and Children provides supplemental nutritious foods, nutrition education, breastfeeding promotion and support and referrals to health care and community resources. The WIC Program is available at five Wake County Human Services locations in Fuquay-Varina, Wake Forest, Zebulon and two in Raleigh. Applicants must be either a pregnant woman; a breastfeeding woman who has had a baby in the last 12 months; a woman who has had a baby in the last six months; an infant or a child up to the fifth birthday. All applicants must also reside in North Carolina and in the health delivery area of the WIC agency; meet income guidelines (all Medicaid, Food and Nutrition Services and Work First recipients meet the WIC income eligibility criteria) and have an identified nutrition/medical risk factor. Aviator Brewing Company tours

Aviator Brewing Company has a bar and restaurant in Fuquay but did you know there is a 10,000-sq. ft. brewery down the road that you can tour Thursday and Friday from 5 to 8 p.m., and Saturday from 3 to 8 p.m.?

Parks and Recreation Advisory Board

The Town is forming a Parks and Recreation Advisory committee to make recommendations and advise the Town Board of Commissioners in matters of recreation. The members of the Parks and Recreation Advisory Board will consist of town residents and residents of the urban service area of Fuquay-Varina. Stars Theater fall and winter schedules are now online and the classes are filling fast. Holly Springs Food Cupboard

The Holly Springs Food Cupboard provides food to those in need in our community. The Cupboard is an all-volunteer organization and is a 501(c)(3) so donations are tax deductible. You can help by donating healthy non-perishable food items such as broth, powdered milk, peanut butter, oatmeal/cereal, canned vegetables, dried beans, rice, canned meats, canned fruits, mac and cheese, personal hygiene products and toilet paper. Depression Support Group

Wake County Human Services and NAMI (Nation Alliance of Mental Illness) have joined forces in an effort to help people with mild to moderate depression. A free peer support group is available in room #4 St. Bernadette Church at 1005 Wilbon Road in Fuquay-Varina on Thursday nights from 7 to 8:30 p.m. If you are experiencing any of these symptoms: irritability, exaggerated guilt and self-criticism, different sleep patterns, lack of energy, lack of interest, feelings of hopelessness, lack of appetite or increased appetite or inability to concentrate, you could be experiencing stress or mild depression. Most people have short periods in their lives when they feel depressed, have setbacks or feel uninspired. NAMI Wake County and Wake County Human Services are offering free peer support groups where people facing difficulties have a safe place to voice their concerns and explore options for making positive changes in their lives with others who have similar experiences.

Overeaters Anonymous

Do you eat when you’re not hungry? Do you go on eating binges for no apparent reason? Is your weight affecting the way you live your life? Overeaters Anonymous offers a program of recovery from compulsive eating using the OA Twelve Steps and Twelve Traditions. OA is not just about weight loss, gain or maintenance; or obesity or diets.
