When Carolina Diesel Trucks members decided to hold a special event for Christmas, they did it the only way they know how.

They went big.

Traveling in a convoy of nearly 60 huge pick up trucks, CDT recently delivered more than 300 items to a Toys for Tots drop off location at Kroger in Apex.

The impressive collection of customized trucks began the holiday-inspired journey in Fuquay-Varina and rumbled its way to the grocery store on U.S. 64.

CDT co-founder and Apex resident Thomas Andrew said he was thrilled with the success of the inaugural event.

“We had an outstanding turnout,” said Andrew. “This night was all about the kids. Our goal was to provide Christmas to less fortunate families and this was a great opportunity to give back to the community.”

Andrew and fellow Apex resident Michael Liles started CDT in July as a way for diesel truck enthusiasts to swap stories, share ideas and enjoy a setting with people who have similar interests.

They boast a collection of members from throughout the Carolinas but the majority of participants are from the local area, including Fuquay-Varina.

“We try to meet once a month,” said Andrew. “We admire everybody’s trucks and pick each others’ brains about different things. We just like diesel trucks and enjoy helping each other out.”

CDT has proven very popular on the web by garnering 2,500 “likes” on Facebook and attracting plenty of visits to its web page.

“It just started with a couple of buddies who like diesel trucks,” said Andrew. “People really seem to like the idea.”

Andrew and Liles plan several large truck meets for members throughout the year. After seeing the success of their Toys for Tots project, similar events could follow.

“Our members really liked the idea of helping the kids,” said Andrew. “I can see us doing this every year.”
