Macon Newby recently spoke to 150 guests at the Christmas luncheon of Priority Associates. Mrs. Newby is the wife of Paul Newby, who was recently re-elected for a second term as Supreme Court Justice. Mrs. Newby chose her favorite soloist, Patty Fussell, to sing for the noon meeting. Patty’s selections were “Mary, Did You Know” and “Falling before Your Throne.”
Macon, who has a degree in Business Administration from UNC and who also graduated from Carolina Law School, was introduced by Faye Johnson. Faye shared that Macon, an identical twin, grew up in Wilson, but now lives in Raleigh with her husband and their four adopted children.
The Newby children range in ages from 17 to 24. Macon home schooled her two sons and two daughters in the earlier stages of their education. She has worked as a clerk at the N.C. Court of Appeals. Her hobbies are walking, riding horses and playing tennis. She also enjoys working on their farm in the country.
As Macon began her remarks, she took the group back to her childhood and told of lying in bed at night with her twin sister; she began pondering some of the things she had been taught about Jesus. She marveled that at some point she would die.
She realized that she was really a person in her own right. Macon knew she would have to answer to God for everything she had said and done personally.
Macon knew her parents loved her, yet, they disciplined her and her sister. She knew there were some things she had done that were not right, so there would be a price to pay. Even at that young age when she heard about Jesus coming to earth and dying on the cross to take away the world’s sins, she knew He had died for her. At that time she asked Jesus to come into her life and save her.
Holding up a black cloth that represented sin, Macon said, “All of us have sinned; no matter what we do, that sin is between us and God. But God loved us so much that He sent His Son, a part of Himself, into the world to take away our sin.”
Lifting the black cloth, she said, “Only Jesus could take away our sin. He came to earth as a baby in a manger sent by God. Jesus was willing to give His life on the cross for us. We now have free access to God, because Jesus did not stay in that manger.
You may hear people say there are many gods and many ways to God, but that is a lie. Quoting Romans 6:23, “For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.” Wages are what we deserve; a gift is what we do not deserve. So we deserve death, but God has a gift for us—eternal life. The only way to have this life is through Jesus Christ when you have asked Him to be your Lord. Let us not leave Jesus in the manger, but let us have Him live in us with joy. Jesus is God!
