As part of their Bronze Award, the Girl Scouts of Troop 1630 took part in a "kids day" at the Durham Food Bank in December.
Girl Scout Troop 1630 of Cary and Apex has earned its Bronze Award. The troop of fifth graders received the highest honor a Girl Scout Junior can achieve.
In order to receive the Bronze Award, the Juniors were required to complete a “Junior Journey,” explore their community, choose a project and make a plan to set their project in motion. The Bronze Award project requires a minimum of 20 hours of work in planning and completing the project.
The troop decided their journey would focus on supporting the less fortunate in our community by collecting donations for the N.C. Food Bank. The overall project was a group effort, with each girl being responsible for how she would advertise the effort and collect donations from sources including classmates, churches or neighbors. The collection garnered 200 pounds of food for the Durham branch of the Food Bank.
Their service continued by participating in the monthly “Kids Day” event held at the Durham Food Bank in December. During Kids Day, volunteers participate in an age-appropriate food sorting project. The troop was tasked to sort and bag sweet potatoes.
While there, the Juniors learned about how the Food Bank operates and how it specifically helps the citizens of the surrounding communities.
