Nine newspapers collaborated to start the National Spelling Bee in 1925. The program underwent a significant surge in popularity, thanks to live TV coverage on ESPN. The purpose in holding a Spelling Bee is to help students improve their spelling, increase their vocabularies, learn concepts and develop correct English usage that will help them all their lives.

All of the Lincoln Heights contestants demonstrated intelligence, poise and courage. The bee lasted more than nine rounds. James Kurdi won with the championship word “occupancy.”

Lincoln Heights Elementary School winner James Kurdi represented Lincoln Heights at the Wake County Spelling Bee on Feb. 23 at the McKimmon Center, N.C. State University. The winner of the Wake County Spelling Bee will participate in the Scripps National Spelling Bee in Washington, D.C., May 28 through May 30.

Lincoln Heights would like to thank the Fuquay-Varina Women’s Club and the Town of Fuquay-Varina for the educational grant, which funded the school’s spelling bee.
