Miller
Robert “Bob” Wilson Miller passed away on Thursday, Nov. 29, 2012. Funeral services were held at 1 p.m. on Tuesday, Dec. 4 at First United Methodist Church, located at 402 North Main Street in Fuquay-Varina. The family received friends from noon to 1 p.m., one hour prior to services. Burial followed the service at Cokesbury United Methodist Church Cemetery, located at 6678 River Road in Fuquay-Varina.
He was born in Porterville, Calif., on Dec. 31, 1924. World War II arrived and the U.S. Government set up a military draft for 18 year olds. The first day to register was Bob’s 18th birthday. Four months later he was in the U.S. Army under Gen. George S. Patton. He was shipped to England on board the Queen Mary. A month after the French invasion at Normandy, Patton’s Third Army went ashore and raced across France so fast they ran out of supplies. They were forced to stop in Nancy, France.
Bob met a local girl, Marquerite and they fell in love. At the end of the war Bob and Marquerite were married and eventually returned to California. There he attended college and received a teaching degree.
In 1952 Bob, Marquerite, son Neal and daughter Joyce returned to Europe where Bob worked in the U.S. military schools for the next 27 years. In 1976, Marquerite died suddenly of a brain tumor.
Bob was shipped to Idar Oberstein, Germany, to be near his son, Neal. Several years later he fell in love with one of his teachers, Lynda Abernathy, and they married in 1979. After finishing his career as a school principal in 1982, Bob returned to North Carolina and retired. He and Lynda have spent 33 wonderful years together.
Bob’s descendants are, son, Dr. Neal Miller and wife, Cathy; daughter, Joyce Miller; granddaughter, Claire and husband, Colonel Pascal Moquet; and their children, Morgane, Ewan, Alix and Gabriel; grandson, Dr. Marc Miller; granddaughters, Mary Miller and Anne Miller. All descendants live in France. This obituary was written by Bob Miller prior to his death.
The family wishes to thank Hospice of Wake County for all the care and support they gave to Bob during his illness. A special thanks to Dr. Wells Edmundson for the many years of care, especially during his illness.
